The Meadow and Forest School
At Tarnerland Nursery School, outdoor learning is at the heart of our approach. Opened in 1933 as one of the country’s first ‘open air nurseries’, we are proud to continue this legacy today. Our large garden, known as 'the meadow', remains a much-loved part of nursery life and provides a rich, natural environment for play, exploration and learning.
Shaded by mature trees and alive with seasonal changes, the meadow offers children space to run, climb, dig and discover. Carefully designed areas within the meadow invite a wide range of opportunities — from messy play in the mud kitchen to quiet storytelling around the fire to swinging on the monkey bars.
Our nursery groups take turns using the meadow every morning and afternoon, ensuring all children have daily opportunities to enjoy the fresh air and freedom of this special space.
Forest School sessions also take place here each week for our over 3s. Led by our trained Forest School Leader, Jan, these sessions support children’s physical, social and emotional development through hands-on experiences in nature. From learning to use tools safely to making shelters and toasting snacks over a fire, Forest School gives children the chance to take supported risks, solve problems, and connect with the natural world.
The meadow and Forest School remain central to what makes Tarnerland unique — offering children the space to thrive, learn and grow within a beautiful, ever-changing outdoor environment.
